The occupational therapists at the Center for Family Connection have expertise in sensory integration. Sensory processing refers to how the brain and body take in, organizes, makes meaning of, integrates, and responds to the information received by the senses (visual, auditory, taste, smell, movement, body position, and internal awareness). This neurological process contributes to how we understand and use our body in the physical and social world, adapt to the demands of our environment, regulate our state and emotions, and engage in meaningful occupations. Early life, developmental, and/or complex trauma can impact how the brain and body interpret sensory information, impacting one’s ability to regulate body needs, emotions, and behavior. Therefore, occupational therapy utilizing a sensory integrative framework can be a powerful intervention to support healing.
Our therapists utilize their expertise in sensory integration together with a wide range of other techniques and approaches to support the holistic needs of each client and family. Our unique and integrated care model includes direct OT services, as well as collaborative and educational opportunities with families and team members.
